Netherlands by Map allows the search and visualization of Dutch municipalties and urban areas by using a map. Facts about these places like population size and density as well as links to pages with further information (e.g., Wikipedia, Google) can be retrieved.

The search is performed for cities and towns of the selected place type. The name of the place or its beginning must be specified. The restriction to a province is optional. All places with a name that equals to the search name will be listed as exact results. If less than 30 places begin with the specified search name, they will be listed as partially matching results, too. After clicking on a place name, the map will depict this place. The search results can be displayed again by clicking on the "Search" entry in the navigation box.

First, define the map by selecting the type of places and what the map symbols should display. Then, you can switch to the map without changing its last (or initial) area or you can switch to an area selected from a given list.
The map visualizes the 30 largest places in the current view by small symbols. Clicking on a symbol opens a small info window with information (status, state, population, population change, density) about the selected place. The same will happen by clickling on the place name depicted in the city list to the right of the map. In addition, the info window contains several links to info pages, e.g., to the corresponding article of Wikipedia or to a Google search.
The left navigation box allows changing between the map definition, the map and the last info page. The use of the "back" button of the web browser changes to the previous info page, but does not lead to a change between the map definition, the map and the info page.
The current view of the map can be panned to a new position by pressing the left mouse button. A double click into the map zooms in at this position. The control in the upper left area of the map allows zooming in and zooming out at the current position of the map.
After clicking on the "Search" entry in the navigation box, places can be searched by name and state.
The use of this service requries JavaScript and a state-of-the-art web browser. The service was tested by the MS Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox 3, Google Chrome 3 and Apple Safari 4. Because of the use of Google Maps, a fast Internet connection is recommended.
The population and location of the places are based on data of Statistics Netherlands. The map is provided by Google Maps.
